- Rexford had an original location on the banks of the Kootenai River and had to be moved to its current location on the shores of Lake Koocanusa, Here is what happened.
- Rexford is now famous for being located literally on the shores of Lake Koocanusa.
Lake Koocanusa was formed in the early 1970’s when Libby dam was built damming up the beautiful Kootenai River to form a lake that is around 90 Miles long and approximately 1 to 2 miles wide with 1/2 of the Lake lying on the Canadian side of the border and 1/2 on the U.S. side. The name comes from parts of 3 different entities. Koo being from Kootenai Indian Tribe, CAN taken from Canada, and U.S.A. obviously from the United States Of America, so you put KOO CAN AND USA together and form 1 word it becomes Koocanusa, thus the name Lake Koocanusa!
Lake Koocanusa has so much room to have fun on with the speed boat, fishing boat, and just simply to tool around on and enjoying some of the finest mountain views that you will see anywhere with the Whitefish range to the east and the Purcell range to the west and the Canadian Rockies to the north ! Much of the lake is surrounded by Kootenai National Forest land and offers so many opportunities to take the boat or RV to your favorite spot!
Rexford and Lake Koocanusa also has some of the finest sand beaches that you will find on any western lake anywhere!
Rexford is a very unique area being located in the middle of so much to do, Just a bit over an hour to Flathead County, About an hr to Libby and 4 hrs to Spokane Washington, 15 minutes to Canada ,and a 10 minute drive into Eureka!
There is so much recreation, camping , 3 places to downhill ski (around an hour and 15 minutes away), all kinds of fishing and water recreation, Birds to watch, photography opportunities and much more you need never be bored !
